When it comes to caring for aging parents, what you don’t do can be just as important as what you do. According to the World Health Organization, dignity is a human right, which include:
- Abuse-free living
- Being free of discrimination
- Autonomy
- Capability to make a difference in communities
Conflict is unavoidable at times. When you are aware that changing relationships can increase the likelihood of conflict, you can work to avoid it.
- Talk with older parents about how they want to age;
- Allow parents to make as many decisions as possible; and
- Focus on positivity.
As parents get older, new needs for their physical and mental health may emerge. Caregivers, including adult children, can promote healthier aging by understanding how to assist their aging parents by providing what they require and avoiding what they do not want.
